The Art of digital Medium-Format Photography…

“What I like about Photographs is that they capture a Moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce …”

[Karl Lagerfeld]

Who I am

My name is Alexander Wagner, I was born in 1969 in Boxberg (Germany) and followed a pretty boring professional career (German Abitur -> studying law & mechanical engineering -> independent working in my own companies in the military & defence industries). I first got in touch with photography in 1986 when my parents bought me my first analog camera, an Olympus OM40 with a trashy zoom kit-lens (…my God, I hated that lens! It was a slider-zoom glass which I never really got fully in focus!!). Anyways, at that time the seed for a long term passion & addiction was set. And there is still no cure in sight… ;-)

Let me be honest here: I don’t shoot for making a living out of it. I work most of my time in project business for mIlitary & defence programs with my other company AW&F Technical Concepts GmbH (check out www.awandf.com if you want to learn more about it…) and I can make a pretty good living out of it.

That said, I am in the pretty fortunate position that I do not need to accept photography jobs I don’t like but to only go for those jobs I feel comfortable with. Now, don’t get me wrong here: having this freedom does not automatically imply that I don’t take my photography work for serious: whatever work I will accept and approach, I’ll give 100% of my energy, passion & ambition. But for me, photography must be fun! If it’s fun, I know I can get exceptional images. Images, which will surely not please everyone. But the good thing is: I don’t have to please everyone! I only have to please YOU - as my client - and myself.

And for me it’s as simple as this…

What I do shoot

I do shoot mainly People and Animals. I’m not saying that I couldn’t do other stuff, but I like the emotional aspect when it comes to shooting and the chemistry that develops during a shooting. Very exciting!

My Gear

For those who are interested: I shoot on Fujifilm digital Medium Format GFX Cameras - offering a higher dynamic range than classic full frame cameras due to a significantly larger sensor size -, in combination with manual focus vintage prime lenses from ASAHI PENTAX - originally made for their medium format system PENTAX 67 - and MINOLTA MD ROKKOR. The “look” you can obtain with this combination - modern digital medium format sensor and a vintage lens - is just what I call “the perfect mix of crisp, non-clinical sharpness and dreamy & mysterious softness (Bokeh)”
